Article 32 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities demands the integration of people with disabilities into development projects and programmes and therefore an inclusive development policy. That means that development does not exclude people but is based on a society for everyone, a society, which accepts all their members as having equal rights and equal value.

Nevertheless, people with disabilities are often deprived of having the ability to contribute to the development of their country. They are regarded as beneficiaries of social services and dependent of their families. Thus they are not only limited in their right to participation and self-determination but also their skills remain unused and workforce and time of their family members are bound.

Projects of inclusive development want to change this. It is their aim to reduce barriers in order to enable people with disabilities to take part in all measures of development cooperation, especially in projects and programmes concerning the areas of education, income maintenance, health, infrastructure and human rights. People with disabilities should be able to improve their life situation themselves and earn their income on their own. Thereby people with disabilities are respected as equal members of the society.
