From Local to Global. Community Based Rehabilitation – A Strategy for Implementation of Inclusive Development

On May 3rd and 4th the international conference "From Local to Global. Community Based Rehabilitation – A Strategy for Implementation of Inclusive Development" will take place in Bonn. It is organised by bezev, caritas international and cbm.

The inclusion of persons with disabilities in projects and programs for development has attained a binding quality through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRP). This applies to all essential areas and levels of development cooperation. With the new Guidelines for Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) of 2010, jointly developed by WHO, UNESCO and ILO, a strategy has been devised by means of which inclusive development cooperation can be implemented in practice. These CBR Guidelines are not limited to aspects of rehabilitation, but address all domains of life within communities, and can be a useful instrument on the national and international level. In this way, CBR can substantially support the implementation of the UNCRP as well as the goals of other international developmental policies, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The aim of this international conference is to highlight the global importance of inclusion of persons with disabilities, as well as to discuss the opportunities and potential for inclusion when the new CBR Guidelines are applied in concrete local settings.
